JanuaryWALK YOURSELF FIT IN THE PURBECKSNordic
walking has made its way to the Purbeck Hills, near Corfe Castle in
Dorset. Brenscombe Outdoor Centre is now running introduction sessions
and coaching sessions for individuals and small groups. First developed
1997 in Finland, its popularity is now growing in the UK with almost 100
recognised coaches running sessions and tuition for a wide range of
people. Using specially designed walking poles, Nordic walking
techniques help to ease stress upon the legs, improve stability on
uneven ground and involves other muscles in the body not normally used
for walking. ‘Nordic
walking is an excellent way of enjoying the countryside whilst improving
your fitness’, says John Blair, Deputy Manager at Brenscombe. ‘It
burns 20% more calories than normal walking whilst exercising the back,
arms and shoulders as well as the legs’. It also helps to strengthen
muscles around the spine and reduces back pain. The
coaching sessions, run by Jeffrey Morris, 48, who is an International
Nordic Walking Instructor, also has other benefits. ‘It is a great way
of staying fit and it is also a social activity that can be enjoyed by
all’ says Jeffrey. Brenscombe runs regular sessions, allowing people
to either enjoy one to one coaching or to get involved with other
walkers on various trips in the area. If you would like to get involved,
call Jeffrey Morris at Brenscombe on 01929 481222. |

January King Of The SwingersThe
UK’s most popular High Ropes Course is in Dorset and is proving to be
a great success with an increase of 50% in the number of people visiting
the site near Swanage during 2004. Burnbake
Ropes Course is run by Brenscombe Outdoor Centre and is one of the
largest sites in Europe. “Over the last few years, since we took over
the site, it has become more and more popular with local schools,
businesses and family groups visiting the area,” says Tim Hughes,
Managing Director. “Last year was a great success for the Ropes Course
and we are now in the middle of developing it even further for the new
2005 season”. The
course now has over 50 different challenges set amidst the Rempstone
Forest on the Isle of Purbeck including a 300ft zip wire and the
opportunity to safely explore the tree canopy 40ft off the floor. During
the winter Brenscombe Outdoor Centre have been developing the site
further to include new challenges that have not been seen in the UK
before, including a high ‘team see-saw’ that involves a small team,
using safety ropes, to work together and balance 30ft off the floor.
Local charities are now making use of the facilities to help raise money
as well as schools that are using the ropes course along with trainers
to develop social awareness and personal skills amongst their pupils.

April Q-Pods in DorsetBrenscombe Outdoor Centre has
just acquired a fleet of Q-Pods for clients to enjoy off-road driving in
unique 2-seater vehicles. Using a purpose built course in the Rempstone
Forest near Corfe Castle, drivers can learn how to handle the Q-Pods
before making their way around the course.
“The Q-Pod is like a large quad bike, but much safer as the
drivers and passengers have a full seat belt and are surrounded in roll
bars”, says Tim Hughes, Managing Director of Brenscombe. The
Q-Pods can also be licensed to run on the roads but the Brenscombe fleet
will only be used on their off-road course. Originally designed and
built in France, Q-Pods are marketed by an organization headed by Noel
Edmunds. They have 340cc air-cooled engines with all round disc brakes
and handle bar steering. “They
are proving to be a great success and are now very popular with our
clients”, says Mr Hughes. This is due to the fact that they are easy
to control as well as being fun to drive whilst under safe supervision
from qualified All Terrain Vehicle instructors. Business clients as well
as private parties visiting the area for weekends or holidays use the
Q-Pods for morning or afternoon sessions testing their newly acquired
off-road skills.

SEPTEMBERKey Skills Training Opportunities For Apprentice EngineersBrenscombe Outdoor Centre is
now offering four and five-day training programmes covering Key Skills
for apprentices attending colleges and engineering firms in the South.
Using the Centres’ accommodation, range of activities and experienced
development tutors, Brenscombe offers a variety of training programmes
to local and national firms. “ We have been asked to run key skill
training programmes for a number of engineering firms and colleges in
the past”, says John Blair, Training & Development Manager, “and
are now expanding this to other clients in the area”. Organisations
attending the courses include Honeywell Normal Air-Garrett in Yeovil,
Flight Refueling in Bournemouth and Bridgewater College. The programmes use a
combination of training
events, reviews, feedback and development
activities using the outdoors in and around the Isle of Purbeck and
Swanage. This brings the learning to life and helps participants to
remember and apply the topics covered during the courses. The programmes run all year
round and are proving to be a great success for the participants and the
employers with over 380 people attending training programmes at
Brenscombe in 2005.

OCTOBER SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT USING THE OUTDOORS FOR SPECIAL NEEDS PUPILS Brenscombe
Outdoor Centre has been working in conjunction with Bicknell School from
Bournemouth over the last twelve months to help its pupils to improve
their social skills by using outdoor education. Bicknell School
specialises in preparing pupils with behavioral, emotional and social
difficulties for post 16 learning, employment and life. The scheme has proven to
be successful and is being repeated for the current school year. Each
week, a small group of pupils attend the Centre between September and
May to take part in a range of outdoor activities. Over the period they
work with the same two outdoor tutors with an aim to develop rapport
whilst participating in the activities. The sessions involve pupils
working together to plan the activities, prepare the equipment, carry
out the activity and then clean and pack away everything after each
session. “We
find that over this long period of time, with regular contact, the
pupils can develop specific activity skills. Once rapport has been
developed, the tutors can also focus the pupil’s attention on their
behaviours, their actions and outcomes, helping them become more aware
of how they affect and influence others around them.” Says John Blair,
Development Manager for Brenscombe, “this way, the pupils can consider
how they can change their approach to people and improve their ability
to socially interact with others.” Over
the duration of each programme, pupils experience a wide range of
outdoor activities and are able to focus on key aspects that they find
particularly interesting, potentially leading to awards and certificates
of achievements, a few of which are nationally recognised. The
pupils find the weekly sessions stimulating and beneficial which also
helps towards attendance and behaviour levels within the school. Ray Jones Assistant Head
Teacher says “ Brenscombe has successfully engaged and motivated
Bicknell pupils and helped develop their self esteem and social skills.
We now have plans to extend our work with Brenscombe to include a
programme for pupils in mainstream schools at risk of exclusion via PACS
- the Personalised Alternative Curriculum Service.” |

| IMPROVEMENTS IN FACILITIES | |||||
| During the winter we have been very busy with clients. However during our quite days we have made some improvements to the Centre. These were based upon the outcomes of a client survey carried out at the end of 2005. We have increased the number of external lights and have included areas such as our covered barn area for groups to make use of in the evening and in the orchard for those who wish to make use of the area near the lounge. Another point provided by several clients in the survey was increasing the amount of white boards available. We now have large boards fitted inside of the Conference room, the 'Granary' meeting room and will soon have one fixed in the Dairy House meeting room as well. The heating around the Centre has also been addressed with a increase in heating and new boilers in the Centre. Roj the Chef was ecstatic with the deliver of a new cooking range as well as other culinary devices such as a new coffee machine which is on order for the dining room. We have also improved the amount and type of radios available for our clients who use them around the Centre and whilst on activities. | |||||

| During the Autumn of 2005, Brenscombe undertook a Business Review with the help of Wessex Business Link and a key client survey. | STAFF UPDATE | |||||
| Our fulltime staff team is practically unchanged with the exception that Rich has now left and living in the Lake District for a few months before cycling from Dorset to Moscow and beyond. Stef has taken over from Rich and is now fulltime.
